3 Exciting Ways To Enjoy Downtown Muskogee

October 8th, 2020 by

Muskogee, Oklahoma, like so many cities in America, has changed over the years. As suburbanization overtook Muskogee around the turn of the century, the downtown district began its decline. The quaint brick buildings that held bustling businesses slowly faded away with the foot traffic lost to urban sprawl.

In 2010, the city created a revitalization plan that for the last several years has seen rejuvenation, sparking a return to downtown. Discover three exciting ways you can enjoy the heart of Muskogee.

  1. 1st Saturday Gathering

On the first Saturday of the month from April through October, downtown Muskogee transforms into a street festival packed with fun for the whole family. The 1st Saturday Gathering features a farmer’s market where you can pick up the freshest local produce, handcrafted arts and craftwork, and much more.

The health-conscious can enjoy a 5K Health and Wellness Walk and a Community Bike Ride. Live entertainment from local and regional acts is free and fun. The Truck, Tractor, and Toy Show present the latest in motorized and windup toys.

You can take part in the Corn Hole Tournament, grab a bite from downtown restaurants or visiting food trucks, and wander through the many shops that now thrive in this revitalized district.

  1. Harmony House

A trip to downtown Muskogee wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Harmony House. Located in the heart of downtown, this cafe and bakery make excellent use of its 100-year-old building.

You can pick up a fresh batch of “Oklahoma’s Best Cookie,” according to Southern Living, or another delicious treat. Harmony House has been voted Muskogee’s Best Place for Lunch, too, so after spending the morning shopping you can stop in for a burger, sandwich, or the special of the day. Soups are made fresh from scratch and change daily.

The menu is full of fun items like The Hobbit, a sandwich of pepper jack cheese, sliced tomato, and spinach leaves on your choice of bread. If you’ve got a hearty appetite, you can try the signature Katy’s Creation. Shredded roast beef is piled high on toasted herb bread and topped with avocado, red onion, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and ranch dressing.

  1. Three Rivers Museum

History buffs will love a visit to the Three Rivers Museum, which was established in 1989 to capture the rich history of the Three Rivers region in Oklahoma. This area was one of the first to be settled west of the Mississippi, and the museum does a fantastic job capturing the early days.

The museum is open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children, and free for kids under 6. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop and pick up your Okie from Muskogee T-shirt.

The revitalized downtown Muskogee area provides visitors with many exciting things to do. The only question is what to do first. You can spend the whole day wandering downtown. Bring your family or a friend, and enjoy this unique city south of Tulsa.
